Keeping control of the Internet

You actually could benefit from giving your employees access to the Internet.  But do they ALL need it?  And do they need it from their desktops?  Aside from the security issues involved in putting your network online, there is the more fundamental and costly problem of employee productivity.

There are a tremendous amount of neat resources out there that can easily draw your employees' attention away from what they really should be doing.  Amazon.com wants to sell them books, online stock trading is beckoning, naughty pictures are giving them a come-hither look, and there are so many news sources available that you could have the most well-informed employees in your industry.  But will it help you sell more, better and cheaper widgets?  Probably not.

One nice solution to the problem is to provide ONE machine in your office that has access to the Internet.  If people need information, they can walk over to that machine.  That helps you easily monitor your Internet usage, and determine if there is a real need for more connectivity.  And the use is somewhat self-policing, since if someone is dreaming the day away on a chat line, the odds are that another employee will cold-cock him so she can check out a vendor's pricing.
