Cool but slow

A client and I were at a computer show this week, and we chatted with the rep from a web development company.  He was a youngster in his twenties (it depresses me that I would refer to someone as a youngster who is in his twenties).  As we chatted, he naturally talked about his favorite web sites created by the company.  "See this one (he pointed at a list).  It's a very cool multimedia site that has video, audio and lots of other stuff.  Of course, after a couple of visits, the user doesn't really care about that anymore, but it is sooo neat."

Let's think about that for a second.  His own statement damned the concept of overloaded web sites.  If you're going to repeatedly visit a site, is it going to be the "cool" one with bells and whistles that takes so long to download, you can get another can of Diet Coke while you're waiting?  Or are you going to hit the frisky web site that gives you the information you need when you need it.  Which is kinda the point of the Web.

Nothing says poor design to me like a web page that is trying to download a 250K photograph as its opening screen.  I just know that it was created by a "youngster" who uses "cool" several times a minute.  And his boss is probably some bamboozled oldster (about my age) who thinks the kid is a freaking genius.
